calfordseaden’s next generation of engineers

calfordseaden’s next generation of engineers

We celebrated the recent International Women in Engineering Day by sharing the achievements of some of our women engineers, those working towards becoming an engineer and supporting wider engineering teams.

Over the past year, we are pleased to have grown our Engineering offering across the practice. We are committed to challenging gender stereotypes within the industry to support and empower more women in their construction careers. We catch up with some of the fantastic calfordseaden women at various stages in their engineering career journey, across our Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Civil & Structural Engineering and Sustainability teams.

Rakhee Patel is an Electrical Engineer who joined calfordseaden in 2013 as a Scanning Assistant.

Rakhee has recently completed her final exams for her Higher National Diploma (HND) in Building Services Engineering at London Southbank University. She will be continuing with her Level 6 Qualification and working towards IEng Chartership from September 2022.

Becka Balch, Revit Technician, was recently a finalist for both The Green Award and The Digital Excellence Award at the MidKent College Student Awards at The Corn Exchange, recognised for her contribution to sustainability and her work within Revit.

Becka joined calfordseaden in February 2020 as a secretary and began studying a hybrid Civil Engineering course at MidKent College in September 2021.

Returning to calfordseaden after an eight-year career break, Marie Henderson has been working hard to grow her skills and qualifications as a Junior Sustainability Consultant, including recently, qualifying as an accredited domestic SAP Assessor, and a Fitwell Ambassador.

Marie’s next step is to complete the BREEAM New Construction 2018 Course with the BRE to become a Licenced BREEAM Assessor. This will enable her to assess the wider sustainability impacts of building design and engage with engineers to meet the BREEAM sustainability performance targets. Marie’s role and expert knowledge is vital in supporting the wider Mechanical and Electrical Engineering team in reaching sustainability targets on schemes.

In May 2022, Karen Ayms and Vicky Kyriacou passed the Passive House Designer Course, demonstrating their commitment to achieving construction quality and low-energy design, fuel poverty reduction and to acting on climate change.

Karen is a Building Services Engineer who began her career working as a technical office manager at a manufacturing company. After deciding to train part-time on a HNC course, she then studied a part-time degree to be a Consultant Design Engineer.

Vicky is a Mechanical Design Engineer who graduated in 2014 with a BSc Hons Degree in Mathematics from the University of Reading. She has since worked as a mechanical design engineer on various projects.

We are incredibly proud of the achievements of all our women engineers and their ongoing commitment to training and development. The diversity of experience and skills is vital not only for fostering a collaborative working environment but also in driving the industry forward and encouraging more women into construction.
