Recent research from recruitment consultancy EMA, highlighted by Inside Housing as part of its Inclusive Futures campaign, has shown that while women make up 37% of board members at housing associations, the number falls significantly when it comes to important positions. Just 32% of board chairs are women and just 20% of audit committee chairs.
In June we held our annual Women at the Top event at Grant Thornton in Liverpool. We had 3 key speakers who spoke about how they progressed in their career to get where they are now. The event was inspiring and thought proving for those who attended and spoke.
Speaking with confidence was a sell-out event and we were delighted to welcome many new faces. Our guest speaker, Marcus Orlovsky is a TED X host and coaches the speakers so they can get their message across clearly in their 10 minute slot.
WISH has marked its 20th year at CIH Manchester with a rebrand giving the organisation a fresh new look and providing the regional branches with a stronger individual identity.
WISH North Wales Summer Social with a difference on 14th June was a great success thank you to everyone that came along to our Summer Garden Party and got involved in all the action and games.
A wonderful afternoon delivered by Richard Pascoe from ‘Making Presentations’ and hosted by Leeds Federated Housing Association. 26 people from across the region and a visitor from the North West all jumped in feet first to participate in ‘Dare to be (a little bit) different’.
A job is no longer for life and with the many restructures affecting people working in the social housing sector across Cumbria, WISH Cumbria has offered support to its members, extending the offer to others in the county working in the industry. WISH Cumbria called upon an HR expert to present a workshop packed with give tips and advice on getting a job (or promotion) in a modern world. It proved to be a very motivating and enlightening afternoon.
Following ever popular demand, we held another successful Secrets of Success event in the WISH Yorkshire and Humber region. The event was really well attended by people from various stages in their career and received all who attended gave great feedback.
DI Suzanne Grimmer from the Metropolitan Police gave a very informative, thought provoking and engaging presentation on how companies and individuals can protect themselves from criminals who strive to steel money, information from individuals and companies, holding them to ransom until money is received to restore their data.
In May 2018 WISH North West hosted a highly successful workshop event in Manchester focusing on Community Development. Julia Wolfendale presented an approach based on looking for strengths in communities and neighbourhoods, rather than highlighting the deficiencies
On May 16th WISH South West held a networking event in Horts, Bristol to coincide with the CIH South West conference.
‘Social media and me’ proved to be a popular session as many of us know we should really ‘do’ social but we’re not really sure how! Our board member (and comms guru) Caroline Chapman, was joined by the talented Hannah Jowett of Leeds Federated to take us on a whistle stop tour of how to get our social media in order!
The awards will continue to highlight the amazing work and achievements of women in housing and to promote positive role models. The awards will complement Inside Housing’s inclusive futures campaign, which aims to promote under-represented groups, and will take place alongside the Inclusive Futures Summit.

WISH North West hosted a fabulous evening of beer & chocolate tasting on 11th April at the beautiful Haigh Hall, Wigan.
There is no doubt of the importance social housing has in providing a safety net for those affected directly by abuse – in all its forms. WISH Cumbria’s first event of the year took place the day before the national Chartered Institute of Housing Domestic Abuse Conference 2018.
On 12th April, WISH North Wales hosted an event all about how to build your career and be promotion ready. More than forty WISH members and friends attended the breakfast seminar, at Wales and West offices in Deeside.

Our North Wales WISH community continues to grow from strength to strength, with over 60 companies from across North Wales now members.
The South West region began 2018 with enthusiasm and a lively board meeting at the offices of Clarke Willmott in Bristol at the end of January.

The holidays were over. Winter colds had set in. We have bills to pay and Leeds was offering us what can only be described as tumultuous weather – however nearly 50 brave women from across Yorkshire gathered together in the fantastic Dirty Martinis for our brilliant beat the January blues event!
The 23rd February saw WISH North Wales host an event where we learnt all about our Chimp, in a workshop delivered by the team behind the highly acclaimed mind management programme, The Chimp Paradox
Thanks to everyone who took part in our ‘WISH at 20’ survey. We were pleased with the number of responses and feedback received.

We enjoyed a highly interactive and informative session on how to Influence and increase your impact led by Sarah Smith of Indigo Coaching and Leadership development.

WISH aims to bring women in housing together to empower, support, encourage and assist, by building confidence through networking and by arranging interesting and informative seminars to assist them with their day to day roles. Our most recent event was the annual Christmas Party, which is always a sell out and a success for obvious reasons! This took place at the end of last year on the 6th December at The Alice.
The rain subsided and the sun shone for the WISH Golf Day which was held at the prestigious Blackheath Golf Club on the 13th September. WISH was delighted to see over 40 enthusiastic women put their skills to the test and receive instruction from professionals in the principles of playing golf with the additional benefits of putting their new learned skills to the test on the driving range and putting green.
The last few months has seen the blossoming of a new WISH Region for the Midlands. The networking group aims to connect women from a range of housing-focused organisations to provide them with support, mentoring, training and career opportunities.

This autumn we welcomed our new Chair, Sasha Deepwell. Sasha has been a board member since May 2015 and was unanimously voted Chair at our annual AGM in September.
WISH SW have a new Board Member, Faye Galvin, from Merlin Housing who has lots of PR, Social Media and Marketing experience which we are grateful for. Sadly, we say goodbye to two of our longest standing BMs, Dee O’Neill and Wendy Murphy, who are moving on to pastures new. We wish them both well and thank them very much for all of their commitment and hard work over the last years.
WISH Cumbria continues to go from strength to strength since it was created in 2015. We are growing steadily with more event attendees becoming members and a diverse range of people attending our events who work right across the social housing sector from housing officers to architects, surveyors and solicitors working in Cumbria.
We are delighted that WISH North Wales Region have been Highly Commended for increasing Equality and Diversity in Housing at the CIH Welsh Housing Awards.

WISH Yorkshire and Humber Region Holds Summer ‘Get Together’ Fun Cocktail Making Evening
WISH Cumbria had a successful “Mastering the Digital” event in June, with the guys from Comms Hero providing some top Twitter tips and advice. Attendees of the event have been upping their Twitter game on both personal and professional accounts – my favourite bit of advice from the event was to use pictures in your tweets as people love them!
WISH SW’s first event of early summer was held in Bristol to coincide with the CIH Housing Conference. The venue was the excellent and historic Horts Pub in the city centre and around 30 ladies (plus a few brave men!) came along for lunch and networking. We on the SW committee have already decided to repeat this next year as it was such a success!
WISH London held their annual Summer Networking Reception on 6 July 2017 at the offices of JLL, who specialise in commercial real estate services and investment management, in Warwick Street, London. The event was very kindly sponsored by JLL and attended by over 100 WISH members and non-members.

WISH North Wales wished for good weather for their Summer social and got it for the event at The Mulberry at Conwy Marina.
The WISH drinks reception was a popular and welcome break from the bustle of the CIH conference in Manchester on 28 June 2017. Over 120 guests were welcomed to the event by Councillor Bev Craig, who is the lead member for dult services and health at Manchester City Council.

We are looking for a new Chair to provide leadership and support for London region of WISH. WISH (London) is the longest established and largest and region within WISH. It has approximately 150 members and attracting on average 60 people to a WISH event.
This year we are celebrating five years of WISH in the North West! It hardly seems possible that it’s been so long, the time has flown. We have built our network to include colleagues in social landlord organisations, development, maintenance, legal, finance, governance, consultancy and more.
WISH SW has continued its run of holding informative and entertaining events. We held a Networking Skills event on March 23rd, kindly hosted by sponsors, Blake Morgan Solicitors in Southampton. WISH SW board members Michelle Thomas and Dee O’Neill provided hints and tips on how to ‘read’ a room when you first walk in so that you can approach individuals or groups of people with ease; explained what a good ‘networking suit’ is and how to follow up on leads to ensure business success.Michelle and Dee both have backgrounds in the male-dominated world of development and construction and have around fifty years of networking experience between them! The event was well attended by women who are both new to the world of social housing and those who were looking to brush up their skills.
The North Wales WISH region group is still less than six months old but is going from strength to strength.
Due to the generous support of sponsors Blake Morgan and calfordseaden, WISH has been able to set up a project fund to drive forward specific revenue generating initiatives, including our long awaited online mentoring programme.
We’ve gotten off to a flying start for 2017! We kicked off the year with our New Year New You event and are looking forward to our Step Out and Speak Out Event coming up next week!

Hosted by Anthony Taylor, and held at our WISH NW supporter Beevers and Struthers Manchester Office, Anthony presented a workshop on how we could improve our CV and also to bust some myths around how a CV should look, the information whilst based around CV’s and preparing our selves for the next career move our position in the same organisation, could also be transferable to our Linkedin profiles.
Hosted by the vibrant Carmen Parkinson from the Business Clinic CIC Preston at our WISH NW supporters office Forbes Solicitors in Preston, we explored the science behind DISC behaviour types, and how those behaviour types interact with each and how we work best.
